David Huw Kern, beloved father, passed peacefully Sunday evening surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Scranton on August 29, 1942, he was the son of the late David E Kern and Mae Daniels Kern. A gifted musician in his own right, David mastered the guitar at a young age before seriously studying the upright bass under the instruction of Ferdinand Liva. David's dedication would lead him to join the Scranton Philharmonic at the age of 15.
Having also studied under Anne Vanko Liva, David was known locally as a professional pianist. He was a regular performer at local events, such as La Festa Italiana, and a founding member of two bands, the Diplomats and Churchill. He will always be remembered with a keyboard and an amplifier permanently in his vehicle as he always had somewhere to perform every weekend.
David graduated from Scranton Central High School, Wilkes College, and Marywood University. He attained a Master of Education after having previously studied history and music performance. He went on to have a successful career as a music teacher at North Scranton Junior High School where he taught for over 30 years. Additionally, David took pride in his beginnings at Gallucci's Music Studio where, at the age of 15, he began teaching guitar and piano. Throughout the years, he would privately teach over 400 students.
David was known locally and out-of-state as an antique dealer. Having participated in multiple showcases, David specialized in ephemera and military weaponry. He enjoyed teaching his daughters about his business and the history of the items he collected.
He is survived by his daughter, Abigail Kern, her fiancé, Daniel Langer, and his son-in-law, Robert Shafer.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Anne Kern Shafer, whom he shared with his former spouse, Patricia Kern.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the many friends, neighbors, and family for their dedication and assistance up until the end. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Willowbrook Place for their compassionate care.
Friends may pay their respects on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit. Graveside Services will be private at Fairview Memorial Park.
