Edith Stephens

January 28, 1931 — February 5, 2024

Edith H. Stephens, 93, of Tunkhannock and Clarks Summit passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Glenmaura Senior Living. She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jack Stephens in 2014.

Born on January 28, 1931 in Centermoreland, she is the daughter of the late Daniel and Alice (Brown) Hontz.

She was a 1948 graduate of Tunkhannock High School. She began her career working for the Commonwealth Telephone Company in Tunkhannock. During her time in the Navy, she was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., where she played an integral role supporting the military operations. Edith left the Navy to come home to marry the love of her life, Jack Stephens, of Nicholson.

Edith was well-loved during her career with the Tunkhannock Area School District. She was a teacher's aide, secretary, and "nurse" to many students and teachers in the middle school and fifth grade building. As her office was at the front of the school, she was often mistaken for the principal, which gave her quite a chuckle.

She had a deep love for all of her family members, especially relishing in moments spent with her daughters, sisters, nieces and nephews and especially her five grandchildren. She hosted many family dinners at her family home in Tunkhannock and there was always room for you at her table.

She is survived by daughters, Schelly Kalmanowicz and husband Paul, Polly Will and husband David; grandchildren, Zachary Kalmanowicz, Benjamin Kalmanowicz (Megan), Samuel Kalmanowicz, George Will (Allison), and Abigail Will; sisters, Alice Lengel and Janet Shoemaker.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by brother, James Hontz and sister, Dorothy Brown.

Edith's family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for the wonderful staff at Glenmaura Senior Living; as well as the kind services of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. The acts of kindness, caring, and dedication to Edith will never be forgotten.

Family and friends are invited to attend Edith's celebration of life service which will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 11:00 AM from the Church of the Epiphany, 25 Church Hill Road, Glenburn, PA 18414 with Rev. Michele Causton presiding. Interment will be held in Nicholson Cemetery.
