Edward Smiles Wicks, OD, known to all as Ned, passed away at his home in Fort Myers, FL, on June 25, 2025.
Ned was born on March 26, 1940, to the late Edward B. Wicks, OD, and Helen Smiles Wicks. He grew up in West Pittston, PA. In his youth, sports were Ned's passion, and he racked up many records and accomplishments. In his senior year he was a 3-sport letterman, he scored 18 touchdowns for the Rams, averaged 20.3 points per game on the hardwood and took three firsts in districts, high jump, pole vault and set a district record in the 180 low hurdles. He was an Eagle Scout and a counselor at Camp Acahela for 4 summers.
After graduating from West Pittston High School, he attended Bucknell University and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He opened his practice In Clarks Summit in 1965 and, after 24 years, joined Northeastern Eye Institute for another 16 years before retiring.
Ned loved softball, skiing, golf, hunting, and traveling. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the family cottage at Lake Winola. He was proud to be the co-founder of the Abington Basketball League. For many years, Ned was a member and president of the Northeast Optometric Association. He was also a life member and officer at the Factoryville Sportsmen's Club and president of camp Earl.
Ned will be deeply missed by his family: his loving wife of 26 years, Barbara Armstrong Wicks; his son, Edward D. Wicks and wife, Lora, children Owen and Dietrich; his daughter, Lynnly W. Nealon and husband, Paul, children, Jake, Max, and Maggie; his brother, Allan B. Wicks, MD, and wife, Bonnie, as well as his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
There will be a celebration of life on October 18, 2025 at the Factoryville Sportsman's Club from 2-6 pm. The address is 124 Gun Club Road, Factoryville, Pa 18419.
