Elaine "DIZ" M. Altmiller, 96, of Scott Township died on Saturday morning at Scranton Healthcare Center. She was the widow of John L. Altmiller. They were married 44 years until his death in 2007.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late David Z. and Anne Reed Miller. She was a graduate of Sargent College of Boston and continued her graduate studies at Columbia University and Penn State University. Prior to retirement, she was a teacher at Landsdowne High School and Clarks Summit/Abington Heights, where she also coached field hockey and basketball. In her earlier years, she also coached softball at Winchester High School in Massachusetts and officiated field hockey in the Boston area.
Diz was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, Wyoming Valley Women's Officials Board, Sargent College Alumni Association, Wednesday Women's Golf League, Wemberly Hills Women's League, Early Birdies, and was a charter member of the Crazy Eights. She also officiated field hockey and basketball for over twenty years throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Surviving are children Kristy Mattise (Mike), Newtown Square PA, Dave Altmiller (Christine), Elmhurst Twp. PA, Cooper Altmiller (Geralyn), Quarryville PA; grandchildren Michael, Danny, Anna, Lanie, Michelle and Drew; niece Linda Miller Lewis and family; nephew Reed Jeffrey Miller (deceased) and family; and cousin, Betts Drew.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Reed.
A celebration of Diz's life will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, 300 School Street. Friends may pay their respects from 10: 30 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment is private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit.
