Elva Veety, of Dalton, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026 at the extraordinary age
of 104. Born in Duryea on February 17, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elmer
and Hazel Swartwood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Roy
Veety.
A talented pianist and organist, Elva served as the pianist for the Bethel United
Methodist Church and, later, as the organist for the Falls United Methodist Church for
decades. She was one of the original members of the Falls Kitchen Band and
entertained audiences with their unique style all over the local area. Her home was filled
with the sounds of her favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, and she passed
her love of music on to her children and grandchildren. At the time of her death, she
was a member of Countryside Community Church.
Elva enjoyed many years of summer vacations at the Jersey Shore, first with her
parents and then with her own children. She loved camping and boating in Canada with
her friends and family. Elva and Roy traveled the world with the P & G retirees travel
group and her most memorable was their trip to Australia, New Zealand and Figi. They
also traveled across the US, Europe and Canadian Rockies.
Elva especially loved going to the casino with her daughters and granddaughter. She
often started conversations with anyone sitting next to her and was proud to tell them
that she was over 100 years old. Anyone who met her said how kind and considerate
she was.
Elva loved her family unconditionally and said that her children were her greatest
accomplishment. As a close-knit family, she loved watching her children grow and have
families of their own. Though at times, distance may have separated Elva from her large
family, to them, she and the family farm were always home.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles (Wilbur) Swartwood, and her
grandson, Donnie Veety.
Elva is survived by her four children, Elaine (Frank) McElhinney, Hendersonville, NC,
Robert (Sandy), Spring Hill, FL, Roy Jr. (Linda), Dalton, PA, and Carole (Arthur) Francis,
Dalton, PA. She also leaves a legacy of 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one
great-great grandson, and several nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
Her family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Allied Services Hospice
Center, Scranton, for their exceptional care and compassion.
Services will be on Saturday, April 18, at 1:00pm at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home,
