Eugenia M. Castanares, 90, of Tunkhannock formerly of the Philippines passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Condrado Castanares in 1992.
Born on March 5, 1935, in the Philippines, she is the daughter of the late Gasbar and Gaegoria (Amper) Mendez.
Eugenia was known for her entrepreneurial spirit, having successfully run a chain of convenience stores in the Philippines. Her business wisdom extended further as she owned a vast property that thrived as a pineapple and mango plantation for the Delmonte Company, known today as Dole.
She moved to Tunkhannock 14 years ago to be closer to her daughter, creating a new chapter in her life while maintaining her roots. Throughout her life, she remained a quiet force in her family, embodying the values of hard work and devotion. Eugenia took great pride in her role as a homemaker and embraced every opportunity to nurture her family, especially her beloved grandchildren. She found joy in raising animals, particularly pigs, which she would buy and sell. Additionally, she was a member of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Tunkhannock.
She is survived by her daughters, Epie Church, Lilila Galang, Mely Morales, Fely Wilderspin, Virgy Maagad, Erlinda Castanares, Celia Thing, Dulce Link; son, Peter Castanares; 20 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by 5 siblings.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
