Evalyn Wells Rudat, 95, of Scranton, and formerly of Fleetville, died on Thursday at Linwood Nursing Center, Scranton. She was the widow of Arthur Rudat, who died in 2005. They had been married for 57 years.
Born in Fleetville, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Iris Estelle Wells. She was a graduate of Benton Township School and Scranton Lackawanna Business College. Evalyn was co-owner and operator of Rudat's Variety Store with her husband in Fleetville and always had a friendly smile behind the counter. She was also the Assistant Postmaster in Fleetville and a volunteer at Allied Services and the American Red Cross Blood Drives. Later in life, she volunteered at St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, Scranton.
Evalyn was a former member of the Fleetville United Methodist Church and a current member of the Waverly United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Fleetville Fire Company Auxiliary and a former Member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was known as a "Holy Roller" at Waverly UMC on Welsh Cookie Making Day, and also for making the best chocolate chip and ginger snap cookies. She enjoyed playing bingo at the Dalton Fire Company for over 50 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Burns and her husband Keith of Scranton; two sons, Art Rudat and his wife Karen of Sterling, VA and Howard Rudat and his wife Tricia of Stafford, VA; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and two very dear friends, Vern and Ag.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother and sister; and a grandchild, Bennett Rudat.
A funeral will be held on Sunday at 5 pm at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit, with services by Pastor Marianne Meyer. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 pm until the time of the service.
