Glenn Layaou

June 21, 1940 — February 11, 2024

Glenn Charles Layaou, Sr., 83, of Tunkhannock passed peacefully at home on Sunday, February 11, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn (Bodnar) Layaou.

Glenn was born on June 21, 1940 at the family home on Copper Mine Hill, Tunkhannock with Jennie Brody in attendance. He was the 13th child of the late Francis and Jennie (Decker) Layaou. He attended Hunter School through 6th grade, then Tunkhannock schools graduating in 1958.

He served his country in the United States Army Reserves and was trained as a medic. He was honorably discharged in 1966. From 1958 to 1964, Glenn worked at McCreary Concrete as a laborer and ready-mix driver. He then worked for George Giberson from 1965 to 1968 as a carpenter. In 1968, Glenn started Layaou Building and built many homes and business structures in the area.

Glenn was a participant in Stonecrest Realty involving rental units in Tunkhannock and Scranton. He was also instrumental in developing Eaton Hills starting in 1989.

He had many interests: he was a founding member of Council 5942 of the Knights of Columbus serving as financial secretary. He served as a bank director of First National Bank of Nicholson.

Glenn loved the New York Yankees and Penn State. At the age of 13, he became centerfielder for the Jenks Ball Club. He bowled and sponsored teams at Shadowbrook Lanes. He was an avid hunter and fisherman in younger years, turning to golf in later years.

Glenn loved spending time with his grandchildren and attended many sports games, dance recitals, and school events.

He was a faithful member of Nativity of BVM Church in Tunkhannock.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, Glenn and wife Amy; 3 wonderful grandchildren, Glenn III, Anna Rose, and Joseph Layaou (fiancée, Kate Musto); sisters-in-law, Beatrice (Dennis) Wygrala, Joyce Reese; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, John (Jack), Edward, Frank, Jim, Harry, Cliff; sisters, Adeline Hess, Isabel Lauritsen, Nancy Russo, Annette Boice, Rosemary Harvey, Margaret Goodwin.

Family and friends are invited to attend Glenn's Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024 at 10:00 AM from Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 99 E. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, PA 18657 to be celebrated by Rev. Patrick Albert. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock with military honors. Friends are asked to go directly to the church on Monday.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St. Tunkhannock, PA 18657.
