Gordon J. Miller, La Plume died Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at home surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Born in Danbury, CT on September 28, 1936, he was the son of Joseph A. Miller and Ruth Sharpe Miller. Gordon was married to Mary Ryan Miller. The couple would have celebrated their 34 th wedding anniversary in April.
Gordon was a fifth generation descendent of Elder John Miller. Elder John arrived in Waverly in 1802. He was a Teacher, Postmaster, Farmer, Surveyor and founder of the oldest Church in Lackawanna County, the First Baptist Church of Abington.
Gordon attended Waverly School until 1950 when it merged with Abington High School. He graduated from Abington Heights High School as Senior Class President. Gordon obtained a degree from Penn State University in Dairy Science and Agronomy.
Gordon began his career working for Beacon Feed Company in Fall River, MA. In 1961, he continued his career at Stanford Seed Company in Eastern New York and all the New England area. In 1971, he was promoted to Vice President of Stanford Seed Company and in 1974 he was promoted to President. He later owned and operated the Agway (Miller's Country Store) Store in Clarks Summit, PA, retiring in 2001.
Gordon loved all sports and enjoyed talking with any other sports enthusiast who would agree or disagree with him. He enjoyed sparring with his friends and family. He was a diehard Boston Red Sox, NE Patriots and Penn State Football fan. We Are! Penn State!
Gordon always said he was a farmer first and a businessman second. After retiring and selling the Agway, he enjoyed his produce and livestock business at the farm that he and his wife owned. He also enjoyed seeing and raising mute swans on his pond. His produce business was unique in that it was a self-service honor system. It started in 1995 with a card table and a cigar box for money. When he started selling more produce from his garden the business grew rapidly requiring a full produce building. The farm stand brought him many joys and lasting friendships.
