Joan Place

Joan E. Place, 93, of Mehoopany died, Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Tunkhannock Rehabilitation & Health Center.

She was the wife of Warren R. Place of 65 years, who preceded her in death in 2015.

Joan was born on September 8, 1931, to Francis and Marion Love Ervin. She was a Mehoopany High School graduate, class of 1949.

On October 18, 1949, she married the love of her life, Warren Place, and helped raise their family on their dairy farm. She spent many summers baling hay and putting up many quarts of tomatoes, pickles, peaches, and plums. She spent many vacations with her family on Pike Lake in Ontario, Canada where they became good friends with many of the Canadians in that area. She was an avid cook and baker and made the best apple pie second to none. Her favorite pastimes were reading and playing cards with family and friends.

Joan was a member of the Nimble Nestmakers and was the Secretary of the Women's Club.

She was the best Mom anyone could ask for. She was always available if anyone needed to talk. She had a great sense of humor and if she started to laugh everyone would end up laughing. She was very loved and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by a sister, Beverly Berdy (Harry) of Tunkhannock; sister, Claire Kretzer (Ken) of Honolulu, HI; son, John Place (Cindy) of Piedmont, SC; daughter, Deb Place (Karen) of Mehoopany; daughter, Vanessa Gowin (Rick) of Mehoopany; granddaughters, Erin Wiernusz (Kyle) of Mehoopany, Kristinia Place of Greenville, SC; grandson, Stephen Place (Tiffany) of Boiling Springs, SC; granddaughter, Jennifer Mills (Bruce) of Dalzell, SC; step grandsons, Ricky Gowin (Robert) of Scranton, Jared Gowin (Samantha) of Towanda and Colston Gowin (Micayla) of Dushore.

Joan was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Wiernusz formerly of Tunkhannock and brother Kenneth Ervin formerly of Millersburg, OH.

Funeral services will be held privately. Interment will be held in Vaughn Cemetery, Mehoopany.
