Joan L. Thorpe

Joan L. Thorpe, 91, of Clarks Summit, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, August 1st.

Joan was born June 29, 1933 in Scranton. She was the daughter of the late Sanford and Louise Robbins. She was the widow of the late Harold M. Thorpe who died in 2013.

She was an active member of the Chinchilla United Methodist Church for many years. She was a dedicated and loving mother, grandmother and great grandma to her family. She cherished family gatherings, special occasions, and following her grandchildren's activities.

Joan is survived by a daughter and four sons: Wayne (Sandy) of Clarks Summit, Linda (Dr. Michael) Umerich of Clarks Summit, Kevin (Amy) of Monroe, North Carolina, Gary (Kathy) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Scott (Kelli) of Clarks Summit; twelve grandchildren: Lauren (Geoff) Roebuck, Courtney (Joseph) Pignataro, Amy (Patrick) Cadden, Julie (Cory) Spangenberg, Dr. Michael (Dr. Jenelle) Umerich; Jacob and Madison Thorpe, Michelle and Everette Thorpe, Kayla, Connor and Makenna Thorpe; eight great grandchildren: Charlotte and Ryan Roebuck, Claire, Patrick and Jack Cadden, and Madison, Emma, and Chase Spangenberg.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Sanford and Robert Robbins, stepsister Betty Cogliser, stepbrother Ronald Morgan, and nephews.

A funeral with services by Pastor Donald Gilchrist will be held on Monday at 10 am at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit. Friends may call on Sunday from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home and on Monday from 9 am until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scranton Area Foundation (Harold M. Thorpe Fund).
