As a dear friend has written, John Fassett was “the dearest, kindest, most generous, most thoughtful, and most fun person ever.” John Benton Fassett, II was born to Esther Margaret “Peg” and Alvah Fassett in Tunkhannock on April 5, 1933 and died October 16, 2021 of complications from multiple myeloma.
John attended Tunkhannock High School and graduated from Wyoming Seminary, University of Virginia, and University of Miami Law School. Shortly thereafter he met the love of his life Gloria Ankers Fassett, and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. John was a proud father of two daughters and was an equally proud grandfather of three. John practiced estate and trust law in Fort Myers, Florida for over 50 years and was honored to have served as a municipal judge for several years. His last role was as Of Counsel at Green Schoenfeld & Kyle.
Returning to his Pennsylvania roots, since 1989 John has been a summer resident of Lake Carey and a member of the Country Club of Scranton. John always had a smile on his face, was optimistic to a fault, and was generous to anyone who crossed his path. Ahead of his time, he was accepting of all people without question. He was a true philanthropist and supporter of the arts, and he was loved and appreciated by family, friends, and neighbors. John was also a world traveler, played tennis and was an avid golfer – playing his last round in September. He donated blood several times every year, and he was an active volunteer on many civic organization boards (some for decades) including Self Help Housing, Optimist Club, Alliance of the Arts, Association of Retarded Citizens, Community Concert, Lake Carey Chapel, and Estate Planning Counsel.
In addition to his wife Gloria, John is survived by his daughter, Jane Fassett Thakar and son-in-law Nicolas Thakar, Alamo, CA; grandchildren, Jennifer Ankers Thakar, Santa Clara, CA, Nicolas Fassett Thakar and wife Haley, Aarhus, Denmark, and Anne Margaret Thakar, Los Angeles; siblings, Barbara Oski Beane, Judy Fassett Aydelott, and Frederick Godfrey Fassett; as well as many nieces and nephews who are proud members of “Fassett Nation.”
John was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Jane Fassett and his daughter, Anne Margaret Fassett.
A celebration of John’s life will be planned at a later date.
