John J. Hunt, 71, of South Abington Township died Wednesday at his home after suffering for 7 years with dementia and Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife of 49 years and sole caregiver, the former Christine (Tina) Petritus.
He was born in Scranton and was the son of the late Joseph and Helen Hunt. He was a 1969 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Upon graduation, John enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Vietnam War. He served in the Navy for four years and spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer from the VP-66 Liberty Bells patrol squadron out of Willow Grove NAS. As a civilian, he worked as an electronics technician at the Tobyhanna Army Depot for 30 years.
John is survived by his daughter, Michele Metzgar and her husband Paul; his grandchildren: Chase, Ella, Will and Chloe; his sisters: Mary Regina Dixon and Ann McMynne; and nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Shane J. Metzgar.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 418 South State Street, Clarks Summit.
