Joseph Donato Mecca, 68, of Chinchilla, passed away on Tuesday at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief but hard-fought illness. He was the devoted husband of Mary Lou Weisenfluh, with whom he shared over 29 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Scranton and raised in Dunmore, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Anthony Mecca and Theresa Marie Zombek Mecca. He graduated from Dunmore High School, where he excelled in track, and attended Vocational Technical School. He went on to study diesel mechanic technology at Lincoln Tech in Allentown.
Joe got his start at Affiliated Foods in Scranton, where he stayed for 20 years. He later transitioned into the automotive field, serving as a service manager at several local dealerships before opening his own business, JM Auto Service, which he successfully ran for over 25 years. For Joe, working on cars wasn't just a job—it was his greatest passion.
A lifelong car enthusiast, Joe found immense joy in attending car shows with family and friends. He especially loved showcasing his 1955 Chevy 210 and had recently added a 1955 Oldsmobile 88 to his collection. While he didn't attend shows to win awards, he was always proud when his cars were recognized.
Joe's garage was more than just a workplace; it was a gathering place. He had a close-knit group of friends who regularly stopped by to hang out, talk cars, share laughs, and lend a hand when needed. The garage was always filled with stories, tools, coffee cups, and camaraderie—a true reflection of Joe's generous spirit and easygoing nature.
The light of Joe's life was his daughter, Jane. He was endlessly proud of her and never missed an opportunity to share her accomplishments with others. His love for her was boundless, and her happiness and well-being were always his top priority.
In addition to his beloved wife and daughter, Joe is survived by his brother, Donato Mecca of Old Forge; his sister, Mary Ann Miller and her husband, Brian, of Dickson City; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly and will deeply miss him. He will also be missed by his loyal companions, Barkley, Lucy, and Pepper.
Joe will be remembered fondly by all who knew him—for his kindness, dedication, and the joy he brought to everyone around him.
