Listen to Obituary

Kenneth Gray Currie, Sr. a native of Portsmouth, VA and longtime 45-year resident of Waverly Township, PA passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2024.

Kenny was born in Sanford, NC on November 1, 1946 to Zelma and Edgar Gray Currie.  He is predeceased by his parents and brother, James Currie and wife Connie, and grandson Brent Currie.

Kenny lived in Waverly Township for many years, but Portsmouth was always home.  A 1965 graduate of Churchland High School, Kenny excelled in any sport he attempted.  Baseball and football were his first loves and he had a truly natural athletic ability.  He was a dynamo on the football field, playing both quarterback and running back.  He brought many accolades to himself and Churchland for his athletic prowess.  He was the only two-time All Tidewater Selection in the history of Churchland, once for quarterback and once for running back.  He made ALL-Eastern, Tidewater, City, Metro, State, Southern and American.  What a record!

He also served eleven years on the Portsmouth Police Force before relocating to PA.  He received a degree in Social Services and became a drug and alcohol counselor at Marworth in Waverly, PA.   Kenny was an avid sports fan, especially the Yankees, a love he shared with his son and grandsons.  He loved dogs, the family always had one or more running around the house.  He loved his family and having them all around for holidays and vacations, everyone together laughing, talking, dancing and cooking in the kitchen.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Sandy (Bailey) Currie, his son Kenneth Gray Currie, Jr. (Deidre), a daughter Rebecca Currie, niece Debbie Bane, sister-in-law Lois DeVeas (Doug) and grandchildren Stephen Frantz (Thalya), Sarah Patee (Will), Sean Currie and great-grandchild Elise Patee.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Traditional Hospice for all their kindness and wonderful staff.

He was a great guy, hardworking, a loving husband, father, uncle and brother-in-law. We will all miss him forever.
