Listen to Obituary

Margaret (Peg) McDade, 88, of Waverly Township died peacefully at her home on Sunday April 13, 2025, attended by her daughter, Debby James of Sugar Land, TX.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward F.  and Mary McDade. Following her passion for the arts, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and Art from Marywood College, and subsequently a Masters of Science, magna cum laude from Marywood College. While still teaching in the Scranton public schools, she began to work as a potter and fiber artist from her home studio. Peg's focus narrowed over the years to fiber arts of weaving, knitting, crochet, stitchery, applique, design and upholstery textiles. She taught students and worked from her home studio in Clarks Summit.

Her fiber art ranged from very large weavings installed in public and private venues to wearable, one-of-a-kind coats, scarves, hats, capes and sweaters. Many in the area will recall her weavings installed at Patsel's Restaurant (closed in 2014) and the Inn at Nichol's Village (closed in 2016), both in Clarks Summit, PA, as well as Wyoming Seminary, Wilkes-Barre and others. Peg's love of color showed in the vibrant designs she created. Her creativity and love of plants also combined in her part-time venture as landscape designer, mostly for private homeowners.

Peg's involvement in the community took many forms, from teaching in Scranton Public Schools, working for Meals on Wheels, providing numerous workshops and presentations in drawing, fiber art and sewing. Peg was a dedicated singer, participating for many years in various local chorale groups, including Singers Guild of Scranton and Ekumen Chorale. She volunteered and supported public TV and WVIA radio in Pittston.

Over the years, she earned many awards, honors and acclaim from art galleries and art institutions. She kept close ties with the Everhart Museum and was a member of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts/NEIU 19.

A true "people-person" she thrived on helping others, sharing her artistic talents, and engaging in the community.

Peg was preceded in death by her sister Miriam McDade and brother Edward McDade.

The family would like to thank Dr. Cristian Politi-Gonzalez. They would also like to thank all caregivers and the entire staff at Traditional Hospice Care, plus the wonderful team at PRO Rehabilitation Services in Clarks Summit.
