Margaret (Molly) Owens Cavanaugh, 97, departed this life on Monday, April 22 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, PA. This world was never meant for one as beautiful as she… Her smile was contagious, her love was constant, and her ability to laugh at herself priceless.
Molly Cavanaugh, born on August 30, 1926, in Dickson City, PA, to Ivor J Owens and Mary J Klocek Owens, grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton Technical High School. In addition to parenting, Molly was the business manager of both Cavanaugh & Son Coal Business and Cavanaugh Trucking. Always putting family first, she was a stay-at-home Mom, Cub Scout Den mother, and President of the Cooper School PTA.
When Dad became disabled, Molly worked in the garment industry for many years. Following his death in 1987, she worked at Everything Natural in Clarks Summit, owned by her nieces. She was known as everybody's "Aunt Molly" and retired at the age of 90.
Her travels included Hawaii and Disney World twice, several cruises, and the Atlanta, Georgia Olympics in 1996 with her granddaughters. She created a catalog of memories for us on our annual summer vacation trips with the grandkids! A lifetime Philadelphia Phillies superfan, she and Matt had dinner with Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Garry Maddox, and Harry Kalas in Scranton!
Molly was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Owens, two nephews and four nieces. Molly is survived by her three children, Timothy Cavanaugh, Lee Ann Cavanaugh Duffy Arnold, and Matthew Cavanaugh, her continuous caretaker, four grandchildren: Tony Duffy, Erin Montgomery, Molly Zimmerman, and Kelly Cavanaugh, four great grandchildren: Hudson and Charlie Montgomery, and twins, Lucy, and Aubrey Duffy, her sister, Kathryn Owens, and numerous nephews and nieces.
A funeral will be held on Friday at 5 pm at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 South State Street, Clarks Summit. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 pm. Interment will be held privately at Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.
Special thanks to Michael Gordon, MD, Clarks Summit, and the "Angels" at Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
