Listen to Obituary

Margaret H. Sheppard (Peggy), loving mother, grandmother and sister passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 11, 2025. She was the widow of Thomas W. Sheppard who died in 2021.

Born in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Lydia B. Hughes. She graduated from East Stroudsburg State College and became a junior high mathematics teacher at Lackawanna Trail High School from which she graduated in 1962. She was a member of the Abington Players theater group and a dedicated member of the Dalton Baptist Church. She could be found on Sunday mornings in the choir loft singing and praising the Lord. She spent many years caring for the church as janitor, participating in vacation bible school, baking Welsh cookies, dipping chocolate covered pretzels, stirring soups and creating wonderful memories with the rest of her church family whom she loved dearly. For many years Peggy delivered Meals on Wheels, Paper Shop magazines and tutored students struggling in math. She was elected as the tax collector for Dalton Borough, a position she held until 2021. She had recently moved to Georgia live out her retirement.

Throughout her life, Peggy exemplified a balanced mix of a Proverbs 31 and Judges 4 woman. She lived a life of purpose, integrity and faith. Her strength and wisdom made her a fierce protector and loyal friend. Her words of encouragement and quick wit will be greatly missed. She loved spending time with her family and friends. In her spare time, she could be found reading a mystery novel, working on a crossword or jigsaw puzzle, or watching the game show network.

Peggy is survived by her son, Douglas Sheppard, daughter Lynda Hill and husband Michael, grandchildren Owen and Mason Yorty and Madalyn Sheppard. Also survived by her sister Donna Wohkittel along with her nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother Scott Hughes.
