Margaret D. Thompson, 88, of Mehoopany went to be with her Lord Thursday, April 30, 2026, at home in the presence of her family after a long illness.
Born October 1, 1937, at her parent's home on Maynard Hill, in Mehoopany, to the late Daniel C. Decker and Mildred Arnts Decker. Due to being the 3rd child of three girls, Margaret was always a "Daddy's girl" and filled the slot of being a replacement son. She loved the outdoors and spent much of her time, riding her bike, following her father around and helping him farm, even when she was too small to reach the pedals on the tractor.
Margaret "Margie" was a 1955 graduate of Tunkhannock High School. After graduation, Margie attended Scranton Business School then worked in an attorney's office for several years. In her later years, Margie also spent many years working at Ames, Bilo's, and Insalaco's.
Margie met her first love, Carleton "Cap" Henning at a square dance. They were married November 21, 1957 and took over the operation of the Henning family farm where they had 5 children. Cap died October 28, 1974.
Margie was given a second chance at happiness with the love of her life when a friend introduced her to H. Robert "Bob" Thompson. They were married December 11, 1976.
Margie had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and a devoted member of the Mehoopany United Methodist Church. She was active in many farm organizations such as PFA, and Grange. She also spent many years working with the Wyoming County Extension Office as a 4-H leader to teach sewing. She was well known for her pie making and especially for her delicious apple pies. She was willing to share her pie making skills with others so that they could learn to bake pies. For over 30 years, she also made the baked beans for the FWM VFC July 4th celebration.
Margie was a homemaker. She worked to make her home welcoming, not just for her family, but for others as well. She made a good many of her family's clothing, as well as used her baking skills to ensure that all her children, daughters and sons, as well as granddaughters and greatgranddaughters knew how to bake and tried to teach all the girls how to sew. She was so well known for her sewing skills that individuals around the community often came to Margie to have projects made such as wedding ring pillows and bridal dolls, clothing or alterations. She was a judge for many years of the clothing department at the Wyoming County Fair. With her experience in sewing, Margie took her skills and love of crafts, she opened the shop, Seam Binders in Mehoopany. She used these skills to always ensure that everyone got some of her homemade gifts, whether it was a quilt, pjs, a table runner, a pillow or something as simple as a clothespin bag.
Margie loved being outdoors, she spent many hours in her flower beds and vegetable garden, so that she could then preserve all the delicious vegetables for her family. She had quite a collection on her canning shelves in the basement. She always had chickens, and was known to enjoy rabbits and even goats from time to time. Every November she could be seen "wearing her orange" for hunting season. Margie has shot many deer and participated in many drives over the years. She also enjoyed ice skating from the time she was a child. Even into her 60's, her great-grandchildren spent time on the ice with her. She spent many summers putting in hay, but she always "worked the mow" because of her great fear of snakes and figured bales would have been handled enough before the mow that any snakes would have been eliminated.
Although Margie didn't like traveling, she enjoyed day trips and her and Bob spent many Saturdays going to yard sales. Margaret loved visiting and hosted many family gatherings such as ice cream making parties. Anyone who stopped by could count on a fresh cup of coffee and some kind of homemade treat. Margie also enjoyed hosting exchange students and close to 20 different students spent time learning about America life at her kitchen table. Margie loved helping people and several different friends and family members stayed at her home for her to take care of them. Any time Margie hears something was going on, she offered to help, whether it was building fence, cutting firewood or butchering chickens; and her offer didn't stop at the farm. She helped serve many dinners at the church and at the firehall. One time when asked how she wanted to be remembered, Margie said she hoped everyone thought she was nice. Margie will be missed.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by, her first husband Carleton Henning, sisters Marion Inman and Eloise Day as well as her daughter Barbara Potuck. Margaret is survived by her husband, Bob Thompson, sons George (Carol) Henning of Mehoopany, Stephen (Tina) Henning of Mehoopany, James (Tim) Henning of Harrisburg, daughter Wendy Layaou of Mehoopany, and 15 grandchildren as well as 18 great-grandchildren.
