Listen to Obituary

Marion G. Hopkins, 96, of Gravel Pond, Clarks Summit, passed away Monday August 1st, at home. Born at home in Scranton to William and Sybilla Gahn, she arrived 2 months prematurely, weighing 3 pounds, including the blanket, and was nursed to health in a wash basket surrounded by warm water bottles.

Later in life, she would tap into that same fighting spirit when diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, Myasthenia Gravis, which she refused to allow to dictate her life.

She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, and in 1953 married the love of her life, Roy. They would have celebrated 69 years of marriage in September. Prior to retirement, she worked at Abington Heights School District.

Marion served our community in many ways, including Troop Leader of Scranton Pocono Girl Scout Council, a Life Member of United Lutheran Church Women, and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing her own wedding and bridesmaids gowns, clothes and gowns for her children. She enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband well into her 80s, especially when they were members at Ballroom 1 Dance Studio. She was a master of making a homemade pie, especially the crust. Her greatest joy was raising her children, and she often said her happiest days were when the family was all at home.

She is survived by her loving husband, Roy Hopkins; daughters Barbara (Robin) of Venon Conn; Sarah (Doug) Prawdzik of Medford NJ; Kathleen (Carl) Rundquist of Chambersburg Pa; Grandchildren Allen (Josee), Karen and Erika; and many nieces and nephews including David Hopkins and his wife Leigh, who surrounded her with tender loving care on a daily basis the final year of her life.

She was predeceased by sisters Jean Wolfe and Dorothy Bowers.

Funeral will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 205 West Grove Street, Clarks Summit, on Friday at 12 noon, with services by Pastor George J. Mathews, Jr.. Interment to follow at Newton Cemetery, Newton Township. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 544, Clarks Summit.
