Listen to Obituary

Mary Ann Karam Horutz died peacefully on December 2, 2025. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

Mary Ann was born on November 17, 1941 to Solomon and Hesna Karam in Scranton, PA. She was raised in a family with ten children all with strong faith and ties to the Lebanese community. She graduated from Saint Patrick's High School in Scranton.

In 1970 Mary Ann married Robert John Horutz and they began a 55 year adventure. She was a dedicated mother and wife, together they raised four children.  She was a fierce defender and supporter of her children and their endeavors. She also held them to account and expected them to work hard and live a kind and generous life.

She was employed by the Abington Heights School District, first at the Middle School and later at the Business Office. Working in the school system permitted her to attend her kids many sporting events, concerts and activities. She became an avid member and eventual leader of the Abington Heights Band Boosters as well as a sideline fixture at field hockey games, golf matches and swim meets.

Mary Ann was also involved with the Community Club and the Canoe Club. She was always up for something new. She golfed, played bridge and Mahjong. In recent years, she loved trips to the casino and shopping with her sisters.

She and her husband loved to travel, but her favorite trips were to see her children and grandchildren. Mary Ann's favorite role was  "Grammy" to her ten grandchildren. She was proud of all their accomplishments and the wonderfully kind people they are growing to be.

She is survived by her children; Michele Rey of Forest Hill, MD, Dr. Kathryn Horutz of Falmouth, ME, Jennifer Jury of Holly Springs, NC and John Horutz and daughter-in-law Kate (Rogalla) of Clarks Summit, PA. Grandchildren Hannah, Luke and Sarah Jury; Brendan, Nathaniel and Andrew Rey; Ethan, Ryan, Allison and Declan Horutz.

Mary Ann was blessed to live her life surrounded by a close-knit family. She is survived by brothers Joseph (Scranton), William and wife Marie (FL), and Albert and wife Marie (Chapman Lake, PA); sisters Theresa and husband Bill Zuerblis (Scranton), Marlene Karam (Scranton) and Evelyn Karam (Scranton) and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann's husband Robert (Bob) died just eight days before her.  She was also preceded by brothers Frank and John Karam and sister Sally Yovish.

The family would like to extend its most sincere thanks to Allied Hospice for the loving and compassionate care she received in her final days.
