Richard Ziegler, 90, of Vestal, NY passed away Friday, July 19, 2024 at UHS Wilson Medical Center, Johnson City, NY. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Violet (Smith) Ziegler.
Born on January 30, 1934 in Binghamton, NY, he is the son of the late Francis and Patricia (Hood) Ziegler.
He honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Richard had a remarkable career at IBM where he worked for many years. He played a crucial role in the creation the bar code scanner and held numerous patents.
Richard's passion for flying was evident to all who knew him. He was an avid pilot and instructor. One of his proudest accomplishments was being recognized as the oldest living pilot instructor. Even at the age of 90, Richard attained his last certification this year.
He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by brother, David Ziegler.
Family and friends are invited to attend Richard's Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 10:00AM from the Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 801 Main Street, Vestal, NY 13850 with Rev. Richard Prior presiding. Interment will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the time of mass on Wednesday at the church.
