Robert Hobbes

May 8, 1931 — May 17, 2025

Robert Orvis Hobbes, 94, of Tunkhannock passed away Saturday, May 17, 2025 at Allied Skilled Nursing Center, Scranton. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lucille Hobbes in 2018.

Born on May 8, 1931 in Danville, PA, he is the son of the late R. Orvis and Eleanor (Ditzler) Hobbes.

Bob grew up on the family farm near Potts Grove, where he developed a deep appreciation for nature and land stewardship and a strong work ethic that would carry him throughout his life.

He graduated from Penn State University in 1953 and went on to serve Penn State as a County Agent in the Agricultural Extension Service for 40 years. During those years he directed 4-H clubs throughout Wyoming County. He enjoyed making farm visits and aided the testing of plant varieties on local farms. After retirement, Bob became well-regarded in his neighborhood for his remarkable "green thumb." He took pride in planting and grooming perennial flower beds and flowering shrubs, some of which adorned his yard with blooms every month of the growing season.

Bob was an active fisherman, hunter, and shooter, and he cherished every moment spent in nature with his family. He was also a proud lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and served for many years as a hunter safety instructor.

A man of profound faith, Bob loved God and faithfully read his Bible every day. He served for many years as a Trustee in the Tunkhannock Baptist Church until its closing in 2014, after which he became a valued member of the Community Bible Church.

He is survived by his sons, Robert Hobbes, Jr. and wife Jill of Tunkhannock, Rev. Larry Hobbes and wife Meg of Chardon, OH, Rev. Wayne Hobbes and wife Lori of Allison Park, PA, and Glen Hobbes and wife Vivian of Salem, VA; sister, Carol (Hobbes) Golden of Valencia, PA; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by sister, Janet (Hobbes) Konchar; granddaughter, Heather Burrill.
