Robert John Horutz, 81, of Clarks Summit, PA, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025, following a brief illness .
Born in Wilkes-Barre to John and Evelyn Sovyrda Horutz, Bob grew up in Little Falls, NJ, and graduated from Passaic Valley High School. He earned a BS in Civil Engineering from NJIT and a Master's degree from NYU.
Bob dedicated more than 35 years to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), where his expertise shaped I-81 corridor improvements as well as the PA Turnpike and bridges throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.
In 1970, he married Mary Ann Karam, beginning 55 years of partnership filled with family, travel, and community. In recent years, he cared for Mary Ann with unwavering devotion, exemplifying love and resilience.
A devoted father, Bob supported his four children in sports, music, and academics. He was a skilled DIY enthusiast, proud of his home projects and immaculate lawn. He also loved to golf and watch Penn State football, do word puzzles, and share Sunday comics with his kids and grandkids. Bob was a cherished grandfather to ten grandchildren, delighting in their achievements and sporting events.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughters Michele Rey of Forest Hill, MD; Dr. Kathryn Horutz of Falmouth, ME; Jennifer Jury of Holly Springs, NC; son John and daughter-in-law Kate (Rogalla) of Clarks Summit; and grandchildren Hannah, Luke and Sarah Jury, Brendan, Nathaniel and Andrew Rey, Ethan, Ryan, Allison, and Declan Horutz.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the GCMC ICU staff for their exemplary care and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon on Saturday at Our Lady of the Snows Church, 301 South State Street, Clarks Summit. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Lebanese Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 9 am to 11:15 am at Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 South State Street, Clarks Summit.
