Robert D. Massaker of Tunkhannock passed away Wednesday September 16, 2015 in Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. He was born in Tunkhannock on November 2, 1920 son of the late Henderson and Lois Kester Massaker.
Bob was a 1939 graduate of Tunkhannock High School where he was the first athlete to letter in five sports in the same year. He attended Keystone College and was an Army Air Corp. veteran of WWII serving with the Eight Air Force as a B17 pilot. He flew numerous missions over Normandy and Northern France. Prior to his retirement he was the owner of Massaker Lumber Co. and had been employed by the Keystone Harvestore in Tunkhannock.
His love for sports led to his interest in the Tunkhannock Baseball Association where he spent hundreds of hours mowing the grass at the ball parks and working on the fields. One of the parks is now named in his honor.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Martha "Peg" Courey and a son Robert H. Massaker. Surviving is his wife of 70 years Carole Fleming Massaker, daughter and son in law Ann and Robert Anderson of Tunkhannock, granddaughter Mauri Anderson of Factoryville, daughter in law Audrey Massaker of Springville and a nephew Andrew Fleming of Ramsey, NJ.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
