Shirley L. Swenson, 88, of Tunkhannock, went home to be with her Lord, on Friday, January 18th, at The Gardens in Tunkhannock. She was preceded in death by her first husband Gerald Byrnes and second husband Romayne J. Swenson.
Born in Hackettstown, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Emma Castner. She graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1948, and attended Centenary College after high school.
Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, friend and a devout Christian. She spent most of her days helping out on the family farm and was a local Avon representative at one time. Shirley was always referred to as a compassionate woman, and always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, even volunteering at Seven Loaves Soup Kitchen. Shirley loved volunteering and attending the county fairs in the area. She enjoyed spending time with her father at Silver Springs Nature Park, and driving to Ocala, Florida every year. Shirley also enjoyed playing Rummy, her flower gardens, berry picking with her grandchildren, playing Bingo, and spending time with her beloved dog Ginger for almost 10 years.
Shirley is survived by her children David Byrnes and wife Kim of Tunkhannock, Joseph Swenson and wife Lynda of Tunkhannock, Daniel Swenson of Clarks Summit, Scott Swenson and wife Debbie of Tunkhannock, and Steven Swenson and wife Tammy of Tunkhannock. She thoroughly enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren Joshua Franklin, Erica Swenson, Brady Glass, Jenna Glass, Devin Byrnes, Abbigail Swenson, Madison Swenson, Rachel Swenson, and Scottie Swenson. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, Shirley was preceded in death by her children Gerald R. Byrnes and Lorraine S. Swenson.
Friends and family are invited to attend Shirley’s funeral service, which will be held on Friday, January 25th, 2019 at 3 p.m. at the Tunkhannock Assembly of God Church, 181 Bridge St., Tunkhannock, PA 18657, with Pastor Rick Wormer presiding. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Friday. Interment will be on Saturday, January 26th, 2019 at the Pequest Union Cemetery, 30 Cemetery Rd., Great Meadows, NJ 07838. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
All floral arrangements should be sent directly to the Tunkhannock Assembly of God Church.
