Wayne J. Miller of Clarks Summit passed away on Saturday, November 26 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Scranton after a long battle with kidney disease and dementia. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, the former Mary Lou Mulligan.
Born in Newark, New Jersey on May 22, 1939, he was the son of the late William and Rebecca (MacMillan) Miller. He graduated from Montclair State University in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in Social Studies/English, then earned a master's degree from New York University in Administration/Curriculum Development. He began his career as a social studies instructor at West Morris Regional High School in Chester, NJ then went into bank marketing and communication with MidLantic National Bank in Newark, NJ, Mid-State Bank in Altoona, PA and retired from PNC Bank, Scranton, PA.
A music lover, he had a special place in his heart for Verdi operas and served on the board of directors of many arts-related organizations over the years.
Wayne was articulate, intelligent, a great story-teller and never lost his sense of humor. He was a great reader, being partial to murder mysteries, history and biographies and was also a fan of thoroughbred horseracing, enjoying the challenge of picking a winner.
Also surviving are a son, Douglas Miller and his wife Lisa of Barton, New York; a daughter, Karen Veltre and her husband Chuck of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey; five grandchildren and a new great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Carolyn Covert, as well as his nephews Stephen, Russell, Robert, and Brian Miller and their families.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert W. Miller.
Wayne's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Dominic Ruggiero for his warmth, compassion and professionalism throughout his many years of taking wonderful care of Wayne.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, December 3, at a visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Casa Bella Restaurant, 330 West Market Street, Scranton, PA 18508 followed by a luncheon. All are welcome to attend.
