William Arthur Ballantyne (Bill) Of West Chester PA passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024.
Bill was born in Scranton, PA on November 13, 1929 to Catherine May Driscoll and James Ballantyne. Bill was married to Joan Bubness on July 3, 1954. They celebrated 66 years of marriage with a family luncheon at the William Penn Inn, North Wales Pennsylvania on July 3, 2020. Joan passed away on September 8, 2020, age 89. They lived in several different locations during their life together which included Watertown, New York, Huntington & South Windsor, CT, as well as Clifton Park, NY, Clarks Summit, PA, Lake Winola, PA, Lansdale, PA and finally West Chester, PA. They resided with son Todd, daughter-in-law Claire and granddaughter Elise, sharing many years of joy and happiness watching their granddaughter come in to this world and grow up with them.
Bill and Joan were also blessed with two other sons, Mark from Clifton Park, New York, and Jeffrey, Prospect, Connecticut, along with Jeff's wife Dorothy and son Joseph.
They loved hosting family gatherings during the holidays for their three children and their families.
Bill had five sisters – Isabelle Clapps, May Patchoski and Carole Vaughn from Scranton, PA and two deceased sisters Jane Cokely from Scranton, PA and Helen Zadrozny from East Hartford, CT.
He graduated from West Scranton High School in 1947 and was chairman of several high school reunions. Bill attended Farleigh Dickinson University and is a graduate of the academy of advanced traffic in New York City.
He also was a Sunday school teacher, junior high superintendent, and youth advisor in the Presbyterian church and was involved with other congregational and Presbyterian churches in subsequent decades.
Bill was employed in the trucking industry for more than 50 years as a pricing manager for several trucking companies in the northeastern U.S. including two Scranton companies: Fowler & Williams and Road Scholar Transport. Upon retiring, Bill researched, wrote, and published the first national directory of truckload carriers.
He served as president for multiple traffic organizations throughout his career, testified before state and national commissions on legal matters, and enjoyed leadership roles in the Boy Scouts, creating the first transportation merit badge.
Bill's favorite hobby was basketball, and began playing in league competition at the age of 42. He was a regular at the Dunmore and Lansdale YMCAs, and earned many senior olympic gold medals, playing competitively in state and national tournaments into his 80s.
He loved his family and friends more than anything, and made great efforts to remain close to so many of these wonderful people from the different areas he lived in over his lifetime. Beyond family, his friends from the South Windsor bridge group were so special. Almost 50 years after moving from SW, the group remained close.
Bill leaves a legacy of kindness, caring, generosity and friendship with everyone he knew and loved.
There will be a service on Friday, April 19th at 1:30 p.m. at the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State Street, Clarks Summit.
