William Oney

William Oney, age 90, Falls Township, died at home on Sunday, December 15th after many years of illness. He leaves behind his wife Barbara Cottell Oney.

William was born in Forty Fort, PA to parents Amos and Bessie (Kibbler) Oney. He lived in Trucksville, graduated from Westmoreland High School, and served in the United States Army in communications in Germany. He then worked for AT&T installing central office equipment in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and later for Commonwealth Telephone Company (now Frontier) in the office and Pay Phone Department, from which he retired.

He and Barbara lived in Brinktown, Falls Township since 1970 and were active members at the Tunkhannock Seventh Day Adventist Church. William served as deacon, taught the adult Bible class, sang solos for church services and worked many hours caring for the church. His quick wit and cracking of jokes kept his friends and family laughing. He was active in church league basketball, local baseball, and golf and walked many miles for exercise as neighbors recognized for many years, and enjoyed many trips to Lancaster, Pennsylvania and northern New England.

Also surviving are son Brian, and daughter Brynn, wife of Tom Jones, all of Falls; also, grandchildren Mallory and Mike Devaney, South Abington Township, and their children Casey and Mila; Gregory and Samantha Jones and their children Scarlett and Elliott, Scott Township; and Christina and Joseph Elias, Bloomsburg; brother Robert, Johnson City, NY; and sister Iris Franklin, Dallas.

He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas.

William's family is deeply grateful for the kind, loving care provided for William by Traditional Home Health and their hospice staff, and Rita Kircher who assisted with his care.

Arrangements are entrusted to Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home for private funeral and interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
